ABOUT CEBU the queen city of the South
Of the 7,100 islands comprising the Philippines, Cebu has the most historical significance. At the time of the global scramble for exotic spices in the East,a Portuguese navigator sailing for Spain, Fernando Magallanes, came upon Zubu (Cebu) on April 7, 1921 The island then was already a flourishing village with "many sailing vessels from Siam (Thailand), China and Arabia docked at the port" as described by Antonio Pigafetta, Magallanes' chronicler. Then begun the Spanish era in the Philippines. However, it deteriorated upon the death of Magallanes in the hands of the brave local warrior, Lapulapu, only to resurrect with the arrival 44 years later, in 1565, of Miguel Lopez di Legazpi.
Its rich and colorful metamorphosis can be traced from 1521 as Zubu, the fishing village and busy trading port, to Villa San Miguel, later to Villa del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus in 1575, then as the municipality of Cebu in 1905 up to its being a chartered city on February 24, 1937.
In the 19th century, Cebu started to exercise a dominant role in Southern Philippines' economic limelight. Agriculture, especially sugar cane cultivation and sugar manufacturing, pushed Cebu into playing an important role in this part of the country. But even more crucial than the agricultural products was her participation in trade and commerce. Proudly, Cebu has been given the honor as having many 'firsts' in the nation's history. Established by Legazpi in 1571, it became the first city in the Philippines, ante-dating Manila by 7 years. In point of fact, it is the oldest city in the country, having the oldest and smallest fort (Fort San Pedro), with the oldest church (Basilica of Sto. Niño), the oldest school (San Carlos) and the oldest street (Colon). Referred to as the Queen City of the South and the seat of early Filipino Christianization, Cebu is also famous for its musical stringed instruments like banduria, guitar and piccolo.
Today, Cebu boasts of being the only city in the Philippines with the perfect blend of a business center and an entertainment hub.

MAGELLAN MARKER, Punta Engaño, Lapulapu City- about 20 kms. from Cebu City- Encouraged by the success of Christianizing the people of Cebu, Magellan crossed the channel to Mactan Island in an effort to spread the faith. Before he reached the shores, he was killed by the chieftain of the island, Lapulapu and his men during the battle for supremacy and freedom on April 27, 1521. Cebu is the gateway and economic hub of the Central and Southern Philippines. The Mactan Cebu International Airport on Mactan Island facilitates comfortable, easy movement for travelers and the number of weekly international flights to and from Mactan is constantly increasing.
Four airlines service numerous daily flights between Cebu and most Philippine cities. There are regular direct international flights to Japan, Hongkong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Korea. Air freight to and from Cebu is reliable and efficient with major international couriers like DHL, FedEx, TNT and Aboitiz International.
Eighty percent of the country's shipping lines are based in Cebu as shown by the presence of 44 local shipping lines. Also, 13 international carriers/shipping lines have offices in Cebu. Nearly 8 km. of shipping berths line Cebu's deep water port area, now the largest outside Manila. Efficient container handling, trucking and storage is available.
Modern communication links utilize satellites, cellular telephone networks and routine land-based telephone services. High quality broadband links and IDD services are available and compatible with systems worldwide. Direct links are maintained over 116 countries. Cebu has a very high density of computer installations, and full access to the Internet.
Radio and television broadcast services are popular advertising mediums. Cable television is installed over a wide area. The government postal service is supplemented by established courier companies. Most international and local courier companies have offices in Cebu.
UTILITIES
Electricity in Cebu is reliable.
The Visayas island group to which Cebu belongs has three main power baseloads which are interconnected into one grid with a capacity of over 2,200 MW of electricity. The main source is geothermal energy, supplemented by thermal and diesel generating plants. These sources provide Cebu with a predictable 220 volt AC electricity at stable prices.
The state-run National Power Corporation generates the electric requirements of the province, distributing it to three major electric firms: Visayan Electric Company (VECO), Mactan Electric Company (MECO), and the Cebu Electric Cooperative (Cebeco).
Potable water is abundant in most areas, with ongoing infrastructure projects providing a significant increase in water supply to meet the growing needs of the industry. Water supply is provided by the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), individually owned wells and independent water districts. MCWD services about 30% of the province's population.
The road and bridge system is undergoing a substantial upgrade to bring the road transport system into the 21st century.
Modern land lines with IDD, fiber optic data lines and Internet Service Providers are available in most areas. GSM digital and Analog Cellular Networks provide good coverage in the city and much of the province. International roaming is supported.
Cebu is the first province in the Philippines to have a complete telephone system. All of its five cities and 48 municipalities are provided with an efficient and advanced telephone system. As of 1998, there were 323,000 digital lines and 13,000 non-digital line. At present, IDD networks reach all major cities in 116 countries on a 24-hour basis. The province has 4 basic telephone companies, six paging companies, five cellular phone companies, and 20 Internet Service Providers. Cebu has a wide range of media facilities. There are seven local television channels, three Cable TV stations, 20 FM and 13 AM radio stations and a variety of local, national and international newspapers.

History of Santo Nino de Cebu
The discovery of the Philippines is linked to Spain's glorious chain of conquests. On September 20, 1519, a fleet of five galleons commanded by Portuguese Navigator Ferdinand Magellan at the service of the king and queen of Spain set sailed from San Lucar de Barrameda to search for the Spice Islands. They did not find the spice island; instead they landed in Limasawa, a small island south of Leyte in the central part of the Philippines. Magellan took possession of the islands and named it after King Philip of Spain.
Magellan's expedition headed for Cebu and found the island very hospitable. He made Cebu the base of his exploration, Christianization and conquests. King Humabon and Queen Juana of Cebu gave him a warm reception and embraced Christianity as well. As gratitude to his hospitality, Magellan agreed to fight with king Humabon who was at war with the neigboring tribe, Mactan. Unfortunately, Magellan was killed in the battle. His men returned to Spain, and that same expedition has set the record to be the first to circumnavigate the earth.
Spain sent another expedition to the Far East Region. An Augustinian priest, named Andres Urdaneta, a world-known cosmographer who lived inside the monastic walls of the Augustinian monastery in Mexico was summoned to lead the expedition. On November 21, a memorable expedition left Mexico for the Philippines and arrived in Cebu on April 27, 1565.
DISCOVERY OF THE IMAGE OF THE SANTO NINO
Because of Cebuanos suspicion that their return is bringing retribution to Magellan's death, another battle broke out. But heavy artilleries and huge cannons forced the natives to flee to the mountain leaving behind their villages burnt to the ground. As Spanish soldiers inspected the burnt village, one soldier found an image of the Child Jesus under the pile of ashes unscathed inside the wooden box. As earlier authenticated entry in the Journal of Pigafetta, clerk in the Magellan expedition, explains the origin of Santo Nino: "On the day Queen Juana was baptized by Father Pedro Valderama, chaplain of that expedition, Pigaffeta himself presented her with the Image." The same Image now lies in the Basilica del Santo Nino and become a favorite destination for millions of pilgrims each year. For four and half centuries now, the Image of Santo Nino continues to make wonders in the lives of many Filipinos. On the third Sunday of each year, in Cebu, millions flock to the streets for a colorful festivity, honoring and placing the Island and the entire Philippines under His Patronage.
During the last World War, a bomb fell inside the Church but the Image was recovered unscathed. It was one of the numerous miracles and powers attributed to the Holy Image.
In 1965 the historic Santo Nino Church was renovated for the observance of the Fourth Centenary of the Christianization of the Philippines held in Cebu City. It was during the centennial celebration that the Sacred Congregation of Rites elevated the Santo Nino Church to the rank of Basilica Minore with all the rights and privileges accruing to such title.
THE SANTO NINO DE CEBU ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL
In 1968, Sally Famarin brought the devotion/tradition to the Bay Area. Her tireless effort has brought national distinction to Americans of Filipino descent, and the Santo Nino Fiesta become a recipient of numerous Proclamations from top US government and ecclesiastical officials as one of the most beautiful celebration and a recognition of the continuing friendship and outstanding achievements of Filipino-American community. The devotion of the Santo Nino was also considered the means of inspiring the highest values in upholding sacred traditions of Philippine culture and heritage here in the Bay Area. Through the late Fr. McGee, pastor of the St. Joseph Church in San Francisco, a marble altar was constructed to enthrone the Image of the Santo Nino de Cebu inside St. Joseph Church. On January 17, 1982 a mass in honor of the Santo Nino was celebrated in thanksgiving for the passing of the US Congress Resolution in recognition of the Shrine as part of National Registry of Cultural and Historical Places. The Vatican and Pope John Paul II also sent an Apostolic Blessing, and said "by this time of writing, the Santo Nino de Cebu is the only Filipino identity that is registered in the National Registry of cultural and Historical Places in Washington D.C·. The Santo Nino in San Francisco strengthen that Image." Unfortunately, few years later, Fr. McGee a strong supporter of the Santo Nino de Cebu Association, died and the new pastor ordered the removal of the historic shrine from St. Joseph Church, and subsequently shut its door to the entire organization. But the acceptance of Merci Ginelsa Alicaway to lead the association has revived the organization. In 1991 Fr. Martin de Poress Walsh, O.P., former Pastor of St. Dominic's Church welcomed the organization to his Parish in San Francisco.
Today, the Santo Nino de Cebu Association International at St. Dominic's Church has continued the lead in upholding its centuries-old devotion to the Holy Infant Jesus. The Association also has become one of the members of its multi ethnic Parish Community in San Francisco. |
